This plugin almost managed to completely slip under my awesome freeware radar, however thankfully I took it for a quick spin today and was literally blown away by it. It was stuck in my to-do list for more than a week waiting to be tested and I’m so glad that I finally installed it and checked it out.
Don’t get me wrong, Pecheneg Tremolo is not a groundbreaking new plugin concept or anything like that, but it is a well coded freeware mixing tool which perfectly handles the tasks which its supposed to perform. And it’s more than just a one trick pony, as I’ll explain below.
Even though it’s called Pecheneg Tremolo, this plugin is actually much more than a simple tremolo effect. It can also work as an auto-pan utility and a high precision faux sidechain generator (for emulating the volume pumping effect without using a compressor). I’ve showcased all three usage scenarios in the short demo video attached to this article.
The interface is nice and clean (although it could be a bit too big for use on smaller screens), the controls are precise and super easy to understand and the performance was flawless, at least on my machine. Every possible setting can be dialed in with less than four or five mouse clicks and everything just works.
The waveform display in the upper-right corner of the GUI is of great help for visualizing what’s actually going on with the processed audio signal and the phase control will help you perfectly align the tremolo/panning effect with the tempo of your project. Speaking of tempo, the plugin can be synchronized to the host application’s BPM setting, or used in manual mode if you prefer setting the tempo in Hz. The plugin is also 64-bit compatible which is becoming more and more important nowadays. I could go on like this forever, but the point is that there’s basically no reason for you to pass on this brilliant little freebie.
Pecheneg Tremolo is definitely one of the freeware highlights of the year so far in my opinion. The concept reminds me a lot of the awesome A1StereoControl freeware plugin in terms of usability and design quality. It is now officially a part of my toolbox of must-have freeware mixing utilities and creative modulation effects.

Noiseash has introduced Action Tremolo, a freeware modulation effect in VST, AU, and AAX plugin formats for compatible digital audio workstations on PC and Mac.
Action Tremolo is a dual modulation effect which can be used to modulate the volume and stereo pan of the processed signal independently. The plugin features three different types of modulation sources – an envelope follower, an LFO, and a 32-step sequencer. The LFO module comes with four standard curves (sine, saw, square, and triangle), a random waveform, and a custom waveform which can be defined by the user. The sequencer module can be set to run any amount of steps between two and 32.
The user interface features places the volume modulation controls on the left and the stereo panning controls on the right. Both sections feature real-time analysis displays for a quick visual reference of the modulated signal. In addition to the modulation speed and depth control parameters, Action Tremolo features a mix knob and a sync switch for syncing the modulation speed to host tempo. Also included is a “vintage analog” saturation effect but I don’t see much use for such a feature in this type of plugin. My personal preference is to simply modulate the signal using one plugin and then use other more specialized effects for saturation, but your mileage may vary.
Tremolo Plugin
In use, Action Tremolo proved to be a capable and intuitive modulation tool. I probably won’t be installing it as a substitute for Pecheneg Tremolo and HY-TP2 (both of which are great freeware plugins), but it’s worth a try if you don’t already have a modulation weapon of choice. By the way, don’t forget to check out the Sweetcase Electric Piano plugin which is another freeware offering by Noiseash. The company is also running an 80% OFF sale this holiday season.
Action Tremolo is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit VST, AU, and AAX plugin host applications on PC and Mac. The installer comes packed in a RAR archive. By completing the checkout process, you will also be signed up for a free Noiseash user account. Email subscription is optional.
